I want to save a Tensorflow 0. I have the read the docs and other posts on this but cannot get the basics to work. I am using the technique from this page in the Tensorflow docs. Question 1: The saving code seems to work but the loading code produces this error:. If not then does one need to add every variable in the graph to the collection before saving? Or do we just add to the collection those variables that will be accessed after the restore?
Partial success based on Kashyap's suggestion below but a mystery still exists. The code below works but only if I include the lines containing tf. Without those lines, 'load' mode throws an error in the last line: NameError: name 'myVar' is not defined. My understanding was that by default Saver. I assume this has to do with mapping Tensorflow's variable names to Python names, but what are the rules of the game here?
For which variables does this need to be done? I've been trying to figure out the same thing and was able to successfully do it by using Supervisor.
It automatically loads all variables and your graph etc.
Below is my code. As you see, this is much simpler than using the Saver object and dealing with individual variables etc as long as the graph stays the same my understanding is that Saver comes handy when we want to reuse a pre-trained model for a different graph.

Hello everyone gladly I found this issue. I am facing the same problem. I am using Python3 and Tensorflow 2. I was able to replicate the issue both with the mnist dataset and the heart dataset. I tried some model variations and I believe that the problem comes from the joint occurrence of feature columns and save model. When I get it right the above code uses the functional api for keras. With the sequential model this issue happens too.
The issue is also occurring when using h5 or json for saving and then loading the model. To be precise the error for h5 is ValueError: 'We expected a dictionary here. Model saving changes model. The model can be restored using tf.

Everything runs without any issue when I use tf-nightly. I am closing the issue as it was resolved. Please feel free to open it if the issue persists again.TensorFlow model saving has become easier than it was in the early days.
Now you can either use Keras to save h5 format model or use tf. Saver to save the check point files. Loading those saved models are also easy.
You can find a lot of instructions on TensorFlow official tutorials. There is another model format called pb which is frequently seen in model zoos but hardly mentioned by TensorFlow official channels. It is widely used in model deployment, such as fast inference tool TensorRT.
While pb format models seem to be important, there is lack of systematic tutorials on how to save, load and do inference on pb format models in TensorFlow. In this blog post, I am going to introduce how to save, load, and run inference for frozen graph in TensorFlow 1. For doing the equivalent tasks in TensorFlow 2. This sample code was available on my GitHub. The major component of pb file is graph structure and also the parameters of your model.
While the parameters are optional for pb file, you need it for our task since we need to use parameters to do inference. Otherwise, people download your pb file and they will not be able to deploy it. You are required to save checkpoint of your model first, followed by saving the graph. Saving checkpoint is easy, you just have to use tf. Saver and everything should be straightforward.
In my code, I wrapped saving checkpoint using tf. Saver in self. Saving graph is to use tf. By convention, if it is human-readable, the file extension we use will be.
But this pb file will not contain the parameters you trained in your model. We then need to freeze and combine graph and parameters to pb file.
There are two ways to freeze graph. You will also need to specify the name of your output node. It can be a string if you only have one output, or a list of strings if you have multiple outputs.
Leave the rest of the arguments the same as mine should be fine. The second method is to serialization yourself. I believe the first method is just a higher-level wrapper for the second method.
The pb files generated from the two methods both pass the accuracy tests that I am going to show below. The model files generated in the model directory are the follows:. We wrote a object to load model from pb files. Working with the models loaded from pb files is a little bit painful since you will have to work with tensor names all the time.
In our case, because we are going to do inference, we need to bind the inputs of the graph to some placeholder so that we can feed values into the model. Here I attached two placeholder to the graph using tf.It's common to save and load a model during training.

Prepare the data and model using tf. Strategy :. There are two sets of APIs available:. Restore the model without tf. After restoring the model, you can continue training on it, even without needing to call compile again, since it is already compiled before saving. For example:. The loaded object may contain multiple functions, each associated with a key. To do an inference with this function:. Calling the restored function is just a forward pass on the saved model predict. What if yout want to continue training the loaded function?
Or embed the loaded function into a bigger model? A common practice is to wrap this loaded object to a Keras layer to achieve this. Luckily, TF Hub has hub. KerasLayer for this purpose, shown here:. As you can see, hub. KerasLayer wraps the result loaded back from tf. This is very useful for transfer learning. For saving, if you are working with a keras model, it is almost always recommended to use the Keras's model.
If what you are saving is not a Keras model, then the lower level API is your only choice. If you cannot or do not want to get a Keras model, then use tf. Otherwise, use tf. Note that you can get a Keras model back only if you saved a Keras model.
